# How old is my Goodman or Amana furnace?

On a Goodman or Amana furnace, the first four digits of the 10-digit serial number are the year and month it was built: two digits for the year, then two for the month. Goodman’s furnace warranty gives the example: a serial that starts 2610 was made in October 2026. The rating plate is on the inner wall of the furnace, behind its front panel.

## How do you read a Goodman serial number?

## Where is the serial number on a Goodman furnace?

Goodman puts the rating plate on the inner wall of the furnace, so it sits behind the front panel, and Goodman says a dealer should be involved in getting to it. A technician can read it for you if you’d rather not turn the power off and remove the panel. An air handler keeps its plate in the same place.

## How can you tell a furnace model number from an AC model number?

A Goodman furnace model number describes heat, not cooling. In Goodman’s GM9S80 spec sheet, `GM9S800603B` breaks down like this:

If the model shows an AFUE like 80 or 96 and a heating input like 060, you’re looking at a furnace. Amana furnaces start with A instead of G, such as the AD9S96 and AR9S96 in Amana’s warranty.

## What do some Goodman furnace serial numbers decode to?

The first two rows are real serials from a Goodman bulletin about its GPG gas/electric package units, which combine gas heat and cooling in one cabinet. The third is the example in Goodman’s furnace warranty, and the last two are made up to show the rule.

## How long do Goodman furnaces last?

Goodman doesn’t publish a typical life in years. In its 2023 furnace rule, the U.S. Department of Energy puts the average life of a gas furnace at 21.5 years: 22.5 years in the North, where furnaces tend to be larger and run fewer hours, and 20.2 years in the rest of the country. Those are averages across brands, and DOE’s literature review found estimates from 16 to 23.6 years.

Yes, for current units. Goodman’s and Amana’s furnace warranty certificates both say the first four digits, year then month, are the manufacture date.
