Brands / Carrier and Bryant air conditioners and heat pumps

How old is my Carrier or Bryant air conditioner?

On a Carrier or Bryant outdoor air conditioner or heat pump, the first four digits of the serial number are the week and year it was built: two digits for the week, then two for the year. A serial that starts 2315 was built in week 23 of 2015, around early June. The serial is on the rating plate on the back of the unit, near the refrigerant line connections.

How do you read a Carrier or Bryant serial number?

Carrier’s service manuals break the 10-character serial into four parts. The first two digits are the week of manufacture and the next two are the year. The fifth character is the factory, where Carrier lists E for Collierville, Tennessee and X for Monterrey, Mexico. The last five digits are a sequence number. A Bryant service manual shows the same layout.

What will the home systems age report add?

The home systems age report will put your Carrier air conditioner or heat pump next to every other major system in your home, each with its build year, how long that kind of system typically lasts, and what to budget for replacing it.

We’re building a home systems age report: your Carrier AC and every other major system, each with its age, typical life and replacement budget.

Where is the serial number on a Carrier or Bryant air conditioner?

The serial number is on the rating plate on the back of the outdoor unit, near the service valves where the copper refrigerant lines connect. Bryant puts it in the same place, just above those connections. The plate lists the model number first and the serial number below it; you want the 10-character serial.

What do some Carrier serial numbers decode to?

Each row applies Carrier’s rule to a serial. The first two are the samples printed in Carrier’s own manuals; the others are made up to show the rule and don’t belong to real units.

Serial Week Year Factory Built around
0106E00001 (Carrier’s sample) 01 2006 Collierville, Tennessee Early January 2006
0118E00001 (Carrier’s sample) 01 2018 Collierville, Tennessee Early January 2018

3612E10234 36 2012 Collierville, Tennessee Early September 2012
4709E00321 47 2009 Collierville, Tennessee Late November 2009

To turn a week into a month, multiply the week by seven: that’s roughly the day of the year. Week 23 lands around day 161, in early June.

Does this work for a Carrier furnace?

Not yet. Carrier’s furnace warranty says the build date is in the model and serial number, but none of the Carrier furnace manuals we checked prints the serial layout, so we haven’t published a furnace decoder. On a furnace, the rating plate is inside the front door panel.

How long do Carrier air conditioners and heat pumps last?

Carrier’s lifespan guide lists 15 to 20 years for central air conditioners and 10 to 15 years for heat pumps. How long yours lasts depends on how it was installed, how hard it works and how it’s been maintained, so the build year is a starting point rather than a verdict.

Why does the build date matter for the warranty?

Carrier’s air conditioner and heat pump warranty starts on the installation date. If that date can’t be shown, the warranty begins 90 days after the build date in the serial number. Your installer’s invoice or the registration record is the better proof of when the clock started.

Common questions about Carrier AC serial numbers

Does the serial number show the exact day my Carrier AC was built?

No. It shows the week and year. Carrier’s 2026 manual says the week follows Carrier’s fiscal calendar, so treat the week as an approximate month rather than an exact date.

Do Carrier and Bryant use the same serial number format?

Yes, for outdoor air conditioners and heat pumps. Carrier service manuals and a Bryant service manual both show the same layout: week, year, factory letter, then a five-digit sequence.

Is a serial starting 01 from 1901 or 2001?

The year has only two digits, so read it in context: in this layout, 06 means 2006. Carrier’s 2005 service manual prints the same layout with 96 as its sample year.
