Brands / Goodman and Amana furnaces

How old is my Goodman or Amana furnace?

On a Goodman or Amana furnace, the first four digits of the 10-digit serial number are the year and month it was built: two digits for the year, then two for the month. Goodman’s warranty gives the example: a serial that starts 2610 was made in October 2026. The rating plate is on the inner wall of the furnace, behind its front panel.

How do you read a Goodman serial number?

Goodman’s and Amana’s warranty certificates say the first four digits of the serial number, YYMM, show the manufacture date. The same sentence appears in the furnace and air conditioner certificates, so one rule covers both. Goodman’s technical bulletins list real serials whose build dates match: on a Goodman packaged unit, 1804165082 was built on April 11, 2018.

Where is the serial number on a Goodman furnace?

Goodman puts the rating plate on the inner wall of the furnace, so you’ll need to look behind the front panel. Goodman suggests involving a dealer to get to it, and a technician can read it for you if you’d rather not turn the power off and remove the panel. The serial is a 10-digit number, listed below the model number.

What do some Goodman serial numbers decode to?

The first two rows are real serials from a Goodman bulletin, on packaged units, and the third is the example in Goodman’s warranty. The last two are made up to show the rule.

How long do Goodman furnaces last?

Goodman doesn’t publish a typical life in years. For gas furnaces in general, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates an average life of 21.5 years. That’s an average across brands; any one furnace can last longer or shorter.

Common questions about Goodman furnace serial numbers

Do Goodman and Amana furnaces use the same serial format?

Yes, for current units. Goodman’s and Amana’s furnace warranty certificates both say the first four digits, year then month, are the manufacture date.

Does this work on an older Goodman or Amana furnace?

The Goodman documents we cite go back to 2018. Older furnaces, and Amana units from before Goodman owned the brand, may use a different format that Goodman doesn’t publish. Goodman’s customer support can date them from the model and serial number.

Why does the build date matter for the warranty?

Outside California, if the installation date can’t be verified, Goodman’s warranty treats the installation date as three months after the manufacture date in the serial number.
