How do you read a Daikin serial number?
Daikin’s warranty certificates say the first four digits of the serial number, YYMM, show the manufacture date: two digits for the year, then two for the month. The same sentence appears in its warranties for split air conditioners, heat pumps and air handlers.

What will the home systems age report add?
The home systems age report will put your Daikin air conditioner or heat pump next to every other major system in your home, each with its build year, how long that kind of system typically lasts, and what to budget for replacing it.

We’re building a home systems age report: your Daikin AC and every other major system, each with its age, typical life and replacement budget.
Where is the serial number on a Daikin air conditioner?
It’s on the rating plate, the label on the unit’s cabinet that lists the model number, the serial number and the electrical ratings. Daikin’s warranties don’t say exactly where the plate sits on each model, so check every outside panel of the outdoor unit, and the cabinet of the indoor air handler.
What do some Daikin serial numbers decode to?
The first three rows use Daikin’s own examples from its warranties. The last is made up to show the rule.
| Serial starts with | Year | Month | Built |

How long do Daikin air conditioners and heat pumps last?
Daikin’s warranties don’t give a typical life in years. In its 2016 efficiency rule, the U.S. Department of Energy estimated average lifetimes of 21 years for central air conditioners and 15 years for heat pumps. Those are averages across all brands; any one unit can last longer or shorter.
Common questions about Daikin AC serial numbers
Does the YYMM rule work on a Daikin mini-split?
Not as far as Daikin documents it. Daikin’s warranty for its ductless models refers only to the manufacture date noted on the unit, so read the date printed on the mini-split’s label rather than decoding the serial.
How exact is the date?
It gives the month and year, not the day. A serial that starts 1806 was built sometime in June 2018.
Why does the build date matter for the warranty?
Outside California, if the installation date can’t be verified, Daikin’s warranty treats the installation date as three months after the manufacture date in the serial number.
