What does the Department of Energy estimate?
In its 2023 proposed efficiency rule for home boilers, the Department of Energy estimated average lifetimes of 26.9 years for gas-fired hot water boilers, 23.7 years for gas-fired steam, 25.6 years for oil-fired hot water and 19.6 years for oil-fired steam. Those are statistical averages from a proposed rule, so they run longer than the typical ranges manufacturers quote.
Do cast iron and condensing boilers last the same?
No. U.S. Boiler gives a conventional cast iron boiler 20 or more years, and a condensing boiler 15 or more, when each is properly installed and maintained.
How do I find out how old my boiler is?
Many boilers don’t code the date into the serial at all. Weil-McLain uses a sequential CP number instead: you find the CP number on the boiler’s barcode sticker and look up which year’s range it falls in, using Weil-McLain’s own table.
